Every year
thousands of men and women enjoy a rejuvenated look
with eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty. Also called
an "eyelid lift", the positive effects of
this surgery can last for up to 15 years. Although
some people actually are born with puffy lower eyelids,
for most of us it's a sign of aging. As you get older,
your eyelid skin stretches, muscles weaken and fat
can accumulate around the eyes causing "bags."
Whatever
the reason, there is no need to look tired
when you don't feel tired. Eyelid surgery removes
fat, excess skin and muscle from the upper and lower
eyelids. The best candidates for this surgery generally
are men and women 30 years and older.
The
Eyelid Surgery / Blepharoplasty Surgery Procedure
Before eyelid
surgery, the surgeon marks the areas where incisions
will be made. To minimize scarring, these marks follow
the natural lines and creases of the upper and lower
eyelids. Fat, excess skin and muscle may be removed
during the procedure and fine sutures make the incision
almost invisible.
Where
Your Eyelid Plastic
Surgery Will Be Performed
Surgery is done at the well-equipped Museum
District Aesthetic Surgery Center and overnight
stays are in a luxurious Park View Suite
at the Park Plaza Hospital. Both facilities
make for a totally satisfying experience.

Eyelid surgery
can be performed in an office-based facility, outpatient
surgical center or hospital. It usually is performed
on an outpatient basis, not requiring an overnight
stay. Local anesthesia typically is used with some
intravenous sedation. The procedure can take one to
three hours, depending on the areas being treated.
In younger patients it now is possible to remove fat
from the lower lids by employing a procedure known
as transconjunctival blepharoplasty. This procedure
consists of making incisions inside the lower eyelid
that leave no visible scar. This procedure works best
on younger patients whose skin is elastic.
After
Eyelid Surgery / Blepharoplasty Surgery
Postoperative
pain is usually mild and relieved with oral medications.
You may resume exercise within three weeks. Swelling
and bruising will subside in a few weeks; it is important
to elevate the head while sleeping. Sutures are removed
within the first week of surgery. Within 10 to 14
days, most people return to work or social situations
and feel comfortable in public with makeup covering
the incision lines. Scars will be either on the inside
of your eyelid or hidden in the crease and typically
fade very quickly.
Of course,
as with any major medical procedure, there are certain
risks associated with eyelid surgery, which should
be discussed with a qualified physician.
The surgeon’s fees for a face lift:
- Eyelids:
start at $4,500
- Lower
eye area: start at $3,100
