Liposuction / Lipoplasty

By Houston, Texas Plastic Surgeon & Cosmetic Surgeon,
Dr. Mark Schusterman

During the past few years, liposuction has been the most popular surgical cosmetic procedure. A thinner, healthier body can make you more self-confident. Liposuction can help trim the chin area, neck, jowls, cheeks, arms, inner and outer thighs, buttocks, knees, hips and abdomen. Individuals of all ages, including men with enlarged breasts, can benefit from this procedure. The best candidates are those who have attempted diet and exercise but still have "figure faults."

Before the Liposuction Procedure

There are two ways to perform liposuction: traditional suction assisted lipoplasty and the newest method, ultrasonic-assisted liposuction. Prior to suctioning fat, both techniques require injecting a fluid into the treated areas to decrease the risk of complications such as bleeding, swelling and bruising. For suction lipoplasty, the fluid helps make the fat easier to remove; for ultrasonic assisted liposuction, the fluid enhances the effect of the ultrasound on the fat tissue. Your physician will help you determine which method is best for you, and it is not uncommon to use a combination of both methods.

The Liposuction Procedure

The original technique, suction-assisted lipoplasty draws loose fat cells into small, hollow tube called a cannula. If the fat is tightly held by your body, suction lipoplasty may be unable to remove all the desired fat.

Similar to suction lipoplasty, ultrasonic assisted liposuction uses a hollow cannula to remove fat. The cannula is connected to an ultrasound generator that vibrates and causes the fat cells to rupture, allowing the fat to be removed. While an improved result cannot be guaranteed with ultrasonic liposuction, a more consistent, predictable result is typical. Because less movement of the cannula is necessary to remove fat, there is less blunt trauma from ultrasonic lipoplasty.

Depending upon the surgeon's evaluation of the patient, general, intravenous or local anesthesia is required for liposuction. The procedure typically lasts 45 minutes per section.

After Liposuction Treatment

Recovery time can vary from one day to two weeks, depending upon the areas treated, the extent of fat removed and the general condition of the patient.

As with any medical procedure, there are certain risks associated with Liposuction, which should be discussed with Dr. Schusterman.
