Who is the ideal candidate?
Obviously not every new mother is eligible for a mommy makeover, because it could potentially do harm if your body isn’t well adapted to the prospect of plastic surgery. On top of this, the product of a mommy makeover might prevent future decision making regarding other children, so it should be considered carefully.
What Is the Mommy Makeover?
The Mommy Makeover is an all-in-one plastic cosmetic procedure designed with moms in mind. Mommy Makeover is defined by Google as a specialized combination of body contouring procedures, performed with the goal to improve the physical changes that linger long after pregnancy. Since pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding can all play a significant role in causing your body to undergo big changes, we use state-of-the-art plastic surgery techniques to help reverse some of the most common postpartum body concerns shared by mothers in Houston and beyond.
Having your own little bundle of joy is a thrilling prospect, and many who have children say that it’s the greatest thing to ever happen to their lives. Despite this, it can do some pretty horrific things to the body of the mother, and postpartum body issues are common. Mommy makeovers, a combination of different cosmetic surgeries, seek to remedy this unfortunate situation.
Makeovers for Moms® is a custom cosmetic surgery plan that combines multiple surgical procedures into one operation performed in a single visit. The most common procedures performed during a mommy makeover are a tummy tuck, breast lift and/or breast augmentation, and liposuction in Houston.
The Mommy Makeover for Moms® Procedures
Stretch marks and loose skin around the abdomen is a common concern among women who have given birth. During pregnancy, your abdominal skin is designed to stretch and expand in order to accommodate your growing baby; however, this can frequently cause stretch marks on your belly and sides from the relatively rapid expansion your abdominal skin must undergo. While stretch marks can be somewhat mitigated with specially formulated lotions and creams applied during pregnancy, it is nearly impossible to avoid them altogether; in addition, some women are genetically predisposed to have deeper, more noticeable stretch marks that cause embarrassment and low-self esteem.
A number of women also experience the appearance of loose folds of skin after giving birth and losing the weight they put on during pregnancy. This loose skin hangs in flaps around the belly button and can make a woman self-conscious about her appearance. The Mommy Makeover includes a tummy tuck, which helps eliminate the appearance of abdominal stretch marks and loose skin by stretching the abdominal skin taut, removing excess skin, and tightening the abdominal wall for a sleek, smooth appearance moms love!
This procedure tightens the abdominal muscle from the rib cage down to the pubic bone and tightens the skin covering both the upper and lower abdomen. A mini tummy tuck or mini abdominoplasty is a similar procedure, but only tightens the muscle and skin of the lower abdomen from the belly button down. Although both procedures will result in a scar along the lower abdomen, the scar can be easily hidden under a swimsuit. Excess fat of the abdomen can be treated with liposuction.
Woman who can not achieve their pre-pregnancy physique
One of the most important qualifiers for whether or not a recent mother is eligible for the mommy makeover treatment is whether or not they can achieve the kind of body they had before pregnancy without plastic surgery. There is no substitute for regular exercise and dieting, and only when these methods fail should one consider a mommy makeover.
Do not want kids in the future
It’s also important for the prospective mommy makeover patient to not want to have children in the future, as it is possible for the procedure to damage your chances of reproducing again.
6 Months after having a kid minimum
It should also be noted that when the procedure is performed too soon after delivering the child, it could harm the mother’s body permanently, and so there must be a 6 month waiting period after delivery before a new mother considers her own surgical makeover.
Breast Implants and Breast Lifts for Moms
One of the most frequent complaints we hear from women who have had babies is the toll that nursing has taken on their breasts. Breastfeeding can cause your breasts to sag, decrease in size, and sometimes even change in shape. Our Mommy Makeovers include a breast lift and/or breast implants to enhance and restore the natural shape of your breasts prior to pregnancy and childbirth. The Mommy Makeover can help get your breasts back to their original beautiful size and shape, leaving you looking and feeling years younger. Talk about an uplifting experience!
When building your custom mommy makeover surgery plan the following breast correction procedures are options that should be discussed:
- Breast implants without a breast lift can provide an improvement in cases of mild drooping. If the nipple is not too low, the skin and breast tissue is not too soft, and the patient is willing to accept some increase in breast size, this can be a good choice for your mommy makeover breast augmentation.
- Breast lift surgery without implants lift the nipples to a higher position while tightening the skin under the breasts. However, breast lift surgery alone does not address the loss of fullness, especially in the upper breast area, which occurs following pregnancy.
- Breast lift surgery with breast implants lifts the nipples to a higher position and also provides additional fullness to the upper and lower breast areas during your mommy makeover breast augmentation.
How is the surgery performed?
As the mommy makeover procedure, just like any other kind of makeover, is specifically tailored to the individual receiving the treatment, it’s impossible to make any blanket statements explaining how the surgery will be performed. However, there are a few general explanations of what the future may hold for you and your body if you receive a mommy makeover.
Unique to each patient
As mentioned, the surgical procedure is completely unique to every individual- what will return one new mother to her full and complete vitality may not be a fully comprehensive or even functional procedure for another new mother.
What does a mommy makeover consist of?
A mommy makeover can be one procedure, or several, but generally they consist of some form of abdominoplasty, breast enhancement, and/or liposuction. Again, this may vary from patient to patient, but these 3 procedures form the base elements of the operation.
Abdominoplasty, more commonly referred to as a tummy tuck, may be used in order to return the unnecessary flab of skin on the uterus that remains after the child leaves the uterus to it’s elastic, taut, and healthy self.
There’s no doubt that bearing, feeding, and eventually weaning a child can be hard on the poor mother’s breasts. Luckily for the mommy makeover patient, one of the procedures on offer is breast enhancement surgery. This will return the poor damaged breasts of a new mother to the firm and healthy condition they enjoyed before pregnancy.
Sometimes, pregnancy can build up a store of unnecessary subcutaneous fat deposits that cause the mother to feel bloated, swollen, and self-conscious, even postpartum. Luckily, liposuction can remove this problem.
The treatment listed above all require some form of anesthesia, and to save the mother from the stress of being simply number for any of the procedures, the mommy makeover procedure utilizes only general anesthetic, so that the patient won’t be conscious for the treatment.
As is the case with any form of surgery, cosmetic or otherwise, the mommy makeover comes with some small degree of risk. Medical complications can occur, and if nausea, dizziness, low blood pressure, or any other number of anomalous health conditions occur, seek the aid of a medical professional immediately.
Benefits of the Surgery
The benefits of surgery are multitudinous- health improvements, appearance improvements, and an increase in emotional health, like a rise in self-confidence and productivity are all proven benefits of the mommy makeover treatment.
Breasts return to a fuller, perkier shape
One of the most common issues with the body after pregnancy are droopy, loose breasts. Pregnancy can be tough on the mammaries, but with a mommy makeover treatment, they can be returned to that fuller, perkier, better rounded shape and condition that you may have thought was lost to you forever.
The nipples no longer face downward
One of the more dramatic changes from pregnancy and breastfeeding is the downwards facing shape that the nipples will often assume. This can be remedied through the breast surgery in the mommy makeover procedure, ensuring your nipples face forward like they did before your little bundle of joy was brought into the world.
Cup sizes enlarged
If necessary, breast enlargement is offered to some patients who go through the mommy makeover procedure. If your breasts are too small or were damaged or reduced in the pregnancy, the treatment can bring them up a cup size or two.
Abdominal wall can be tightened
One of the most burdened parts of the body during the pregnancy process is the abdomen- having a growing uterus really tends to stretch out the lining of the tummy area. Luckily, that can be tightened back into the firm elastic shape it held before pregnancy.
Stretch marks can be reduced
Stretch marks are one of the most commonly bemoaned facets of pregnancy- an annoying reminder of the pain and difficulties you had to endure while pregnant. Thankfully, surgery can be used to reduce them. While stretch marks can never be completely removed, the mommy makeover treatment can do all but make them completely invisible.
Proportions and midsection contour can be fixed
Pregnancy can do strange things to the typically normal proportions of your body. However, these proportional changes aren’t permanent, and your midsection can be contoured and sculpted back into a regular size and bearing in no time.
Fat Removal After Child Birth
When pregnant, fat cells collect in several areas on the body including the abdomen, thighs, and arms. In the final portion of the Mommy Makeover, liposuction focuses on the removal of those fat cells on the abdomen and thighs while an arm lift is required to remove excess fat and skin from the upper and lower arms. These cells can be next to impossible to eliminate through diet and exercise alone. The liposuction procedure included in the Mommy Makeover targets these common problem areas, leaving you with the smooth, sleek thighs and abdomen you remember from your pre-baby body.
When building your custom cosmetic surgery plan the following fat removal procedures are options that should be discussed:
- Liposuction reduces the localized abdominal fat deposits that can develop during pregnancy. Liposuction can also be used to treat fat deposits in the hips, thighs, and knees.
- Arm Lift (Optional). An arm lift reduces excess fat and skin from the upper and lower arm. Dr. Schusterman will make an incision on the underside of the arm to suction out fat deposits. Excess skin will be removed and the incision site stitched shut.

A lot of people have questions about the procedure- that’s perfectly normal. Here are some of the questions we receive most often about the treatment so that you can relax and be comfortable knowing the details about what you’re about to get in to.
What if I get pregnant?
If you end up pregnant after the mommy makeover treatment, the best thing to do would be to call the surgeon who worked on you and your primary care physician and discuss the matter extensively with them in order to determine the best path forward for you is. As all Mommy Makeover treatments operate on an individual basis, it still may be perfectly safe for you to have the baby- but you should call first to find out.
Are there scars?
Any surgery is going to have some degree of scarring- that much is inevitable. However, the incredibly capable surgeons that operate on patients for mommy makeovers have a steady hand and a keen eye and know how to keep any scarring to a minimum.
Are there stretch marks
For some of the skin tightening procedures like abdominoplasty or other such treatments, it is possible for stretch marks to appear. However, it isn’t entirely likely, and shouldn’t be a primary concern if you’re considering a mommy makeover.
How safe is it?
With the innovations of modern medicine and considerable oversight from the FDA and AMA, medical procedures have gotten very safe in the past decades. Mommy makeover is no exception- while there will always be a small degree of risk from a surgery of any kind, the types of treatments which a mommy makeover employees are incredibly safe by today’s standards.
Can I transfer fat?
With a combination of liposuction and the breast enhancement surgery which mommy makeover offers, it is possible for a fat transfer to occur. That said, it isn’t right for everyone, and you should speak to your surgeon and your primary care physician before deciding if fat transference is right for you.
Recovery for Mommy Makeover
A mommy makeover involves several major procedures so patients should be prepared for a significant recovery period after surgery. Certain patients may need to stay overnight at the facility. Swelling, bruising, and pain are to be expected, but they can be controlled with compression bandages and medication. Patients should spend the first few days after surgery resting and recovering and avoid strenuous activities for at least six weeks.
The recovery for the mommy makeover treatment, much like the treatment itself, is dependent upon the specific medical conditions of the patient and their body’s willingness to heal and repair itself.
When can I return to work?
If your occupation or area of work is a particularly strenuous endeavor, it’s advised that you wait up to 6 weeks before returning to work. However, if your work is only mildly or even absent of physically stressful conditions, then you may only need to wait 2-3 weeks before returning to work.
When can I exercise/workout after my Mommy Makeover?
Maintaining your new body is an important part of the procedure itself, so there’s wisdom in being concerned with when you can return to exercising after the procedure. However, you need to wait up to 6 weeks before engaging in even walking, light cardio, and mild muscle exercises. More hardcore exercise, like core workouts, serious weightlifting, or running all require a recovery period of 6 months or more.
When can I resume eating?
If your procedure lacked any work on the abdomen, then you can start eating normal foods almost immediately- within a day of the procedure- but if you received a tummy tuck or other abdominal surgery, then you may wish to wait 2-3 days before you eat foods which may agitate the digestive track.
