Breast procedures are known to be one of the best ways to enhance a woman’s confidence and create a positive body image. This can be done in a myriad of ways. As in breast augmentation, breast lift surgery can improve the body contour, balance breast size irregularities and enhance your own body image.
Also called mastopexy, a breast lift reshapes and firms the breasts by removing excess skin. Some women choose this surgery to correct the appearance of loose breasts caused by excessive weight loss or after having children.

The Breast Lift
Breast lift surgery works by getting rid of excess skin and tightening the remaining skin to create a perkier look that basically defies gravity. The nipple may also be relocated in order to improve the proportions and symmetry of the whole breast. This is performed under general anesthesia through a variety of techniques that dictate the size and location of the incision(s) and where skin and tissue are removed. Additionally, a breast augmentation with your breast lift can not only bring the nipples higher, but provide additional fullness and improved shape, particularly in the upper breast even when relatively small implants are used.
Good Breast Lift Candidates
Breast lift surgery is perfect for women who have experienced sagging of the breasts due to pregnancy or weight loss and want to reshape them to create a firmer, elevated bust. Breasts requiring a lift are characterized by sagging and volume loss with your nipples pointing downward or located below the breast fold.
Mastopexy can be performed on any size breast, but if your breasts are large you may require a breast reduction as well. Other candidates include stretched skin and enlarged areolas, as well as having one breast lower than the other- corrects symmetry and nipples. Request a consultation with Dr. Mark Schusterman to see if you are a good candidate for breast lift surgery.
Types of Breast Lifts
The breast lift procedure itself will conform to your specific breast shape and size and the results you are looking to achieve through surgery. Different methods involve different placing of the necessary incisions, how much skin is taken out and where, as well as other aesthetic factors.
Periareolar Lift (Donut Lift)
The periareolar mastopexy method results in the lowest amount of scarring because they only requires one circular incision around each areola, no vertical cut. This surgery aims to decrease areola size and alter the location of the nipple to a more aesthetically pleasing position on the breast, as well as tightening the surrounding skin. They are therefore often paired with a breast augmentation so the breasts are both lifted and full. It is best used for patients who need a minor lift.
Vertical Lift (Lollipop Lift)
This type of breast lift uses what is called a “keyhole incision.” The doctor cuts around the areola, and then adds a V- shaped incision starting at the base of the areola and moving straight down to the bottom part of the breast. When closed, the resulting scar looks like a lollipop, thus the name. This technique is used for patients with more sagginess such that the periareolar incision alone would be inadequate. It too can be used with implants depending on the desired postoperative look of the breast.
The anchor lift involves 3 incisions, using the circular incision around the areola, an incision from the nipple to the fold, and a horizontal incision in the breast crease, resulting in an anchor shaped scar. This type of incision is sometimes necessary in breasts that have major sagginess. Like the aforementioned lifts, it also reduces and relocates the areola to a more pleasing spot. It too can be used with implants if necessary.
Dr. Schusterman will elevate the entire breast, including relocating the nipple and areolas (the surrounding pigmented skin), removes excess skin from the lower breast, and then reshapes the remaining skin. Some women choose to have implants in conjunction with breast lift to increase breast volume. The procedure generally takes about two hours to complete and is performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis.
In many cases, women wish to enhance their breasts in other ways. A lift provides an opportunity for improving not just the shape and buoyancy of breasts, but the size as well.
If you choose to undergo the mastopexy procedures, you may wish to explore the option of implantation to boost the size and shape of the breast too. Augmentation of the breasts is often a desirable accompaniment to the lift because it both provides a sexier shape, reduced sagging, and fuller dimension in one fell swoop.
Implants can be great when used together with a breast lift because the breasts gain both elevation as well as volume. There are numerous breast implant options available such as size, shape, and composition. Dr. Schusterman will gladly go over each option, explaining the pros and cons and his expert recommendation.
Unlike implants which involve placing a foreign silicone or saline-filled object inside your body, the fat transfer process utilizes fat from other parts of your body and is therefore a more natural path to fuller, perkier breasts. If you choose to go this route, Dr. Schusterman can pair the breast lift and augmentation with a liposuction treatment that also eliminates unwanted fat from elsewhere in the body and contours the area. This can be taken from the stomach to enhance the whole upper body, or from the thighs, buttocks, and other areas you wish to reduce.
Breast reduction is less often undertaken by patients coming in for a breast lift, but it is an option if you feel that your breasts are sagging due to excessive size and weight. In this case Dr. Schusterman can use the incisions to tighten skin, lift the whole breast, minimize the areola, relocate the nipple, and eliminate breast tissue to create a smaller, more proportional breast. Reduction may be a great choice for women who are suffering from back problems as a result of a large chest.
Swelling and bruising are a normal part of the recovery process and may last for a few weeks. Patients should not sleep on their stomachs, avoid bras with underwire and lengthy immersion in water until the sutures can be taken out, as the wounds need to heal. Patients are often asked to wear a postoperative garment, similar to a bra, for a period of time after surgery; this acts to secure and protect the area, and allows it enough stability to heal properly. Reduce upper body activity for 7 to 10 days. Scars will fade considerably over time. Results generally last 10 to 15 years, but cannot indefinitely counter the natural aging process.
A More Beautiful You – Breast Lift Results
Full results will be apparent within the first few months after bruising and swelling has vanished. Scars will heal slowly, first appearing inflamed and red and eventually fading into undetectable lines. Breasts should remain elevated and firm for up to 10 years after the surgery. Many patients experience a rise in self-confidence after their breast lift surgery, stating that they feel younger looking and more feminine.
The cost of breast lift surgery varies because there are so many different surgical paths that can be taken. Financial outcomes will rely on what technique the surgeon uses in accordance with your breast shape and size, and whether you decide to couple the breast lift with augmentation, reduction, or other procedures such as a Mommy Makeover. All of these options can be discussed with Dr. Schusterman during your initial consultation in his Houston office, when he will also be able to give you a more detailed idea of pricing depending on your desired results. Financing options are available.
